SU Updates

We are back! We hope that you have had a well-deserved rest over the winter break and are ready for the new year. After the government’s announcement yesterday (4th January 2021) England will be entering lockdown from Tuesday 5th January until mid-late February 2021 (at the earliest). We know you may be feeling frustrated and anxious about the decision and we can reassure you that we are here for you, wherever you are.

The Students’ Union Executive Officer team and service staff are still be available to contact via email and social media. We are still here for you and will continue to offer advice and support to all students. Should you need support our Welfare, Advice and Support Team are here for you.

Unfortunately this does mean that all sport and societies in person activity will need to stop, but online activity will still continue. Please contact individual groups to see how you can get involved. You can find their social media channels and contact details here

Additionally, due to the continued concern surrounding COVID-19 (Coronavirus), the University and the SU have made the difficult decision to withdraw all teams from organised BUCS leagues and competitions this year.

The uncertainty posed by the current lockdown and risk of travelling into neighbouring regions following this has been deemed to be too high. The safety and wellbeing of students, staff and the local community must come first, and it’s imperative we maintain the low levels of infection we saw throughout Term 1.

We appreciate this may come as frustrating news for some of you and wish this action wasn’t necessary. We are working to ensure you can operate virtually for the time being (where possible) and ensure safe return to play, in line with government and NGB guidelines, when this allows. For more information or if you have any ideas you’d like to discuss, please email your coordinator: [email protected]

The UniExpress shop located on Boughton Green Road will remain open from 11th January Mon - Fri 12pm - 5pm. Sat - Sun, 12pm - 4pm. From 24th January the opening times will be Mon - Fri 12pm - 7pm. Sat - Sun 12pm - 4pm.

The Art Shop inside the Creative Hub The Engine Shed and Pit Stop Café on Waterside Campus will remain closed until at least mid-February. The Platform remains closed.

In line with the new guidance, students are being advised not to return to campus to reduce the rising coronavirus cases, and only a selected number of courses can return to campus earlier in January. These are the following:
• Medicine & dentistry
• Subjects allied to medicine/health
• Veterinary science
• Education (initial teacher training)
• Social work
• Courses which require Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Body (PSRB) assessments and or mandatory activity which is scheduled for January and which cannot be rescheduled.

Subjects that are not included on this list will start online learning from the beginning of term (11th January) until at least mid-February. We would advise you to check your timetable and NILE to confirm. You can find the latest newsletter from the University here with further guidance and information.

The University are still offering rapid-result COVID-19 testing for all students without symptoms who will be returning to campus. From Tuesday 5 January you can book in advance online, alternatively individuals can drop in between 10am-3.30pm Monday-Friday.

Please follow us on social media to keep up to date with the exciting things you can be a part of during lockdown and once we are able to return. Please stay in contact with family and friends during this time and ask for help if you need it.

The University Counselling and Mental Health Team offer free confidential support to students to help manage your emotional and mental wellbeing.
