Hi I’m Charlotte and I am President of the Book Society and History Society.
I created the Book Society in November 2019 as part of my first year. It was really important to me that there was somewhere where students could continue their love of reading and escape academic reading. I became part of the History Society at the beginning of my academic year and in March when the committee roles were up for renewal, I decided to take the role as President to help the continuation and development of the society.
As President of two societies my roles differ slightly. My roles for the Book Society are to choose the books that we vote on each month, ensure that everyone in the society and committee are happy - getting the most out of the Book Society - and supporting the running of the monthly meetings. With the History Society my roles are to ensure we have a strong communication with the History Department, make sure we are doing activities of which the members want to do and ensure the committee members are supported in their roles.
One of the most rewarding and positive experiences of being President of the Book and History societies is the friendships I have made. Societies encourage you to meet lots of different people which is so important. These new friendships and relationships have helped me develop as a person. The societies also help me to take a break from my degree which is very important to our mental health. They have given me the opportunity to relieve stress, take a step back and sometimes just have a laugh. So if you haven’t already joined a society, it is worth considering to help you take breaks.
Managing people in a committee is a life skill. I am fortunate enough to have lots of experience managing volunteers and knowledge about committees through Scouting. It has enabled me to learn how to settle disputes, how to hold meetings, how to communicate to members and the list goes on! All of these are important skills to have in the future and work place setting. This experience of management will help me to develop as a person and has increased my confidence in new environments.
The Student Union has been super supportive throughout the last year. From requesting information about how to start a new society, to actually forming that society, to dealing with my endless questions and requests and finally to supporting me into a second Presidential role and taking over a Society. Everybody at the Student Union is really welcoming and friendly and I have particularly made the most out of their drop in sessions in the Learning Hub at the beginning of the year.
If you would like to join either of the Book or History Society, or have any questions about how I manage the roles please do not hesitate to pop me an email at [email protected] You can also follow the Book Society on Instagram @uonbooksociety and the History Society @historysocietyuon
